The Truth That Sets Us Free
God’s Word tells us to be in the world but not of it. What does that mean? How can we be in the world, but not of the world? By recognizing the truth. God’s Word also tells us that we shall know the truth, and the truth will set us free. So what is the truth?
The truth is that God is in control. Nothing exists in the world that God does not allow. He has the power to cancel anything in the world if he so chooses. And, as his children, so do we. Choosing to follow the world, therefore, is to deceive ourselves. When we recognize that God is in control of all things, we realize that the world has no power over us. Not people nor our circumstances. God is in control.
This is the truth that can set us free when we allow it to. But all too often we unconsciously allow people and things to have control over us, leaving us feeling stressed, powerless and afraid. This is all part of the great deception that leads us to be “of the world.”
But change is always possible and our choice. The instant we choose God over the world, we go from feeling stressed, weak and afraid to peaceful, strong and loved.
Ironically, however, even when we have chosen God as our source of power, we still sometimes cave in to the pressures and temptations of this world. That is all a part of the process of our spiritual growth.
While we can choose God for our lives overall, we must also choose him in the details of our lives daily. As the expression goes, “The devil is in the details.” Choosing God daily strengthens our faith and helps us remain of him rather than of the world regardless of the challenges and temptations we face.
The world can be a beautiful place, but only when we know and live the truth. God is in control and is our true source of power. This is the truth that sets us free.
