God Is Your Father

(A Father's Day message for fatherless sons)

You never knew your father. What does that make you? I know the world has a word for it, but the truth is, God is your father. That makes you a child of God.

I know you would have liked to have known your earthly father. It would have been nice to have had him to talk to about things like sex, relationships, work and life in general. But somehow, you made it through without him.

And look at you now. You’re all grown up with a family of your own and have turned out to be a wonderful man.

I know it hasn’t been easy. There were times, especially as a little boy and throughout your journey into manhood, when you were so afraid. When things went wrong, as they often seemed to, there was no earthly father for you to turn to. So you did the best you could with what you had, and somehow you made it through. You not only made it through, but you’ve done better in life than a lot of men do who have had their daddies with them all their lives.

Even now, you marvel at how this can be so. How is it that you can give fatherly love that you never received? How is it that you can provide the comfort and security you could only imagine coming from a father you never knew? How do you know how to do these things?

It’s obvious to me. God is your father doing double duty for you here on earth and in heaven. In every dark and uncertain moment throughout your life when you thought you had no father, God was there. He was your father. He was the one who tucked you in at night, who protected you from the bullies in school, who told you what to say and how to act on your first date, and who helped you understand the importance of always doing your best.

And he is the one who’s with you now. He’s the one who helped you become a wonderful husband and father, build an admirable career and become a respected citizen and servant in the community.

Yes, God is your father and always has been. And I say he’s done an excellent job of raising you.

Inspired by my husband, Timothy Edward Davis.
